#StolzaufdasSauerland

We are firmly rooted in the Sauerland region. Since our founding in 1876, Wilhelm Manz GmbH & Co. KG has been based in Schalksmühle. While we have relocated twice over the years, we have always remained in the same town. This region, characterized by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), is a true center of tradition, stability, and innovative strength. We at Wilhelm Manz GmbH are proud to be part of this strong medium-sized business sector – and have been for 149 years now!

A closer look at the Sauerland region quickly reveals that true hidden champions and global market leaders are based here – in a region that often does not immediately come into focus among major economic centers. The Sauerland and neighboring Siegen-Wittgenstein are part of the South Westphalia industrial region. This region has long been the number one industrial region in North Rhine-Westphalia and even ranked third in all of Germany during its best years. Currently, we are in fourth place. The reasons for this are varied.

Skilled labor shortages, infrastructure in need of expansion, inflation, and declining orders are just some of the challenges affecting this region. Another factor is the demolition of the Rahmede viaduct on the A45, which has disrupted an important transportation link for the Sauerland area around Lüdenscheid since December 2, 2021. This closure presents our region with major logistical and economic challenges and places additional burdens on local businesses.

However, there is also good news in this regard: Last week, after a long wait, the steel topping-out ceremony for the bridge was celebrated – a significant milestone for our region, which will hopefully regain its former strength even in an economically challenging situation. This is a glimmer of hope showing us that despite all difficulties, we are on the right track. This development will not only strengthen the competitiveness of South Westphalia but also attract new investments, secure production capacities, and preserve jobs in the region.

The medium-sized business sector is the backbone of our economic region. It is all the more important that we all work together to support and strengthen local businesses. For a strong region. For a strong Sauerland!
